League Of Legends Worlds 2020 Finals Records Over 2 MILLION Registrations
Riot Games’ online multiplayer arena esports video game “League of Legends (LOL)”, which boasts an active monthly player base of over 100 Million is in its 10th instalment of League of Legends World championship. The world championship Kickstarted on 25th September in Shanghai, China with a roster of 22 teams across the continents.
The traditional multi-city hosting format was scrapped by Riot Games due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and restricted to Shanghai where teams are competing in an “isolation bubble” environment.
The pool of 22 teams is now reduced to top 8 (Top Esport, Fnatic, Suning, JD gaming, Gen.G, G2 Esports, Damwon Gaming and DRX) who are competing in the quarterfinals for a multi-million-dollar prize pool and a chance to lift the 32 Kg Summoner’s Cup.
Almost Half-way into the championship, Riot Games announced that Worlds 2020 finals would be hosted with fans in Shanghai’s Pudong Football Stadium, which has a capacity of over 30,000 on 31st October 2020. Amid the pandemic, only 6,312 fans will be allowed in the arena to maintain social distancing protocols.
As the week’s pre-registration window opened, not many expected the overwhelming response. David Higdon, the Global Head of Esports Communication at Riot Games, tweeted that over a million people had applied during the pre-registrations within just four hours of the registration window going live on Monday. Within 12 hours of the window being live, Higdon noted Riot had received nearly two million applicants.
Unfortunately, the limited seats would crush the hopes of millions whereas a few lucky ones would get to experience the sublime world of League of Legends.
